Common Mistakes with CAT Tools and How to Avoid Them

As a lecturer introducing students to computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, I observed that beginners often face specific challenges when starting to use these tools. These mistakes, while common, can be avoided with a few tips and hands-on practice. Based on my teaching experience, here’s a breakdown of the most frequent errors and practical advice on how to avoid them. 1.  Incorrectly Setting Up the Translation Memory (TM) One common mistake is not properly configuring the translation memory at the start of a project. This can lead to misaligned segments or missing translations, affecting both quality and consistency. How to Avoid It : Before starting, ensure that the TM is correctly set up. Double-check the source and target languages, and test a few segments to confirm that the TM is capturing translations accurately. Also, make it a habit to regularly update the TM to avoid losing translations. 2.  Ignoring Project Terminology CAT tools often provide terminolo...

RWS Trados Studio 2024: A Leap Forward in Translation Technology

Over the past few months, I have tested Trados Studio 2024 , and I must say, this release is more than just an update— it’s a real leap forward for CAT tools. With significant improvements in AI integration and project management, it is clear that RWS has truly raised the bar this time. Trados Copilot: More Than a Simple AI Assistant One of the standout features is Trados Copilot , an AI-powered assistant that goes beyond the typical translation suggestions. Copilot can now assist with batch processing , improve terminology accuracy , and apply customizable or standard prompts to "refine" translation style and tone. The integration is so seamless that it feels like having a virtual assistant right within your translation workflow. I found that it handles repetitive tasks like pre-translation and term extraction with impressive efficiency, adapting intelligently to each project’s specific needs. Cloud Integration for a Smoother Workflow The enhanced cloud integration in St...

Exploring memoQ 11: A Review After A Couple of Months

As a professional translator, I’m always on the lookout for tools that can make my workflow more efficient and improve the overall quality of my translations. After several months of using memoQ 11, I have had the chance to explore its new features and upgrades. While the buzz around memoQ AIGT (Artificial Intelligence Guided Translation) is real, there are many other improvements in memoQ 11 that deserve attention and can make a big difference in our day-to-day work. Here’s a breakdown of the most interesting updates for translators and project managers alike. 1. Improved Translation Memory (TM) Performance One of the first things I noticed when using memoQ 11 was the speed and accuracy of its Translation Memory (TM) . MemoQ 11 has significantly optimized TM performance, especially with large translation databases. I often work on projects with extensive TMs, and previously, I sometimes experienced slow searches or lag when retrieving matches. With memoQ 11, the searches are lightning...
